Sugar Birds: A Novel
Upmarket fiction – In other words, it’s got the character-driven, thematically layered, lyrical elements of literary fiction in the suspenseful, page-turning plot you’ll find in commercial fiction.
When young Aggie accidentally lights a tragic fire, she hides in a rugged Pacific Northwest forest where no one can find her—including smart, mercurial Celia and two irresistible young men: one brilliant and autistic, the other, dangerous. An evocative coming-of-age story about personal wilderness, trust, and the search for forgiveness.
After I wrote a sketch several years ago about a young girl escaping a fire, that same girl began awakening me at night with childhood memories of how my sister and I (raised emotionally feral) climbed sixty and seventy feet into ancient firs on our grandparents’ land, escaping the heartbreak of a difficult, ill mother. Where she failed us, the wild forests and fields of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula taught us, nourished us—even showed us the character of God. In Sugar Birds, I wanted to tap that setting and those interactions as my book’s imagined, composite characters search for, and find, hope-filled ways through the grief they endure.
