“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it but that it is too low and we reach it.”
Michelangelo 1475-1564, Sculptor, Painter, and Architect For some of us, a major obstacle in our lives could be that we do not believe in our own potential to be or accomplish all that we want to be in life. Some of us are so scared of the consequences of failing that we fail to act. Some of us want to be safe. So when we are faced with a challenge, we may defer the opportunity to another because we fear change to the routine in our lives. And, with all three of these scenarios, as a result when we do not ultimately believe in our greatness, we decide to settle or retreat from life. Or in other words, we may be placing the bar too low to the point where we become disillusioned as the call to something more is ignored. Life is a continuous learning experience. I would much rather have a closet full of opportunity rather a closet full of trophies. Our goals should set us on a path, rather than be an end to it. What we are doing is creating a foundation that we can continue to build on as we set out on the journey closer and closer to our highest dreams and aspirations. Aim high, believe in your greatness and challenge yourself to reach out. Don’t set limitations for your life. Build on the opportunities as they present themselves. Life is not so much about the destination as it is about the journey of discovery on the path along the way. As Michelangelo set out with the example of his life, he continued on his path of discovery and rediscovery so that his talents could be enjoyed by the world in so many shapes and forms. He must have aimed high, for his legacy has us all visualizing the face of God through his eyes. Reach higher than what you believe is possible and you will surprise yourself. Don’t set the bar low having accomplished your goals only to wake up each morning asking the question “Is this it?” Re-parent yourself and speak amazing words to your psyche acknowledging how special, smart or particularly talented you are in a certain area. Then as Les Brown has reminded us “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Aim high and enjoy the journey as your beauty, talents, and purpose unfold! So raise the bar and be your own version of Michelangelo in this era!
