Follow the golden rule!

“There’s one sad truth in life I’ve found While journeying east and west – The only folks we really wound Are those we love the best. We flatter those we scarcely know, We please the fleeting guest, And deal full many a thoughtless blow To those who love us best.”

I guess I am guilty of this, aren’t we all!  Why is it that we save our very best for the people that we work with, but when we come home we are disrespectful to those we make our lives with?  Why is it that we are at our best with those we have no obligations to, but at our worst with those we have made commitments to love? Why is it that we choose words of highest praise to win over the the fleeting guest, but choose words of lowest quality to destroy the person whose heart we are supposed to protect. Having been the giver and the receiver of the latter, I wonder how it is that our highest aspirations in relationships can somehow spiral into the worst nightmare.  And, when we awake to this nightmare, how do we go about making the necessary changes to move forward in a positive direction where hope for a better future can be a reality.  Well, i suppose if we go back to the golden rule it may lay out a golden path to follow- Do unto others as you would would have them do unto you- or love one another as i have loved you!  I guess simply stated, be impeccable with your words and loving in your actions with those who are closest to you, because therein lies the magic of the world.  When we are good to the ones that are closest to our hearts, we gain credibility with ourselves and then with the stranger or the fleeting guest.  Think about it, kindness begets kindness.  We need to remember that each of us has a choice especially when we are not caring or being cared for the way that God intended.  Love is a gift that needs to be valued as if it were greater value than a precious diamond.  When we do not care for it that way, we tarnish the precious diamond.  When we care for it, then the precious diamond becomes brighter then we could ever imagine.  So the choice is ours, choose to protect those we love from harm, especially if it comes from us, because there the love we experience can be greater than we could ever imagine. Something to think about! Do your best to follow the golden rule and everything else will fall into place!
