Just got back from a weekend away with my family, my first tribe. I needed it so desperately. Lots going on. Life seems to be moving at such a rapid pace lately. A weekend to just slow down and connect outside of my everyday routine is exactly what the doctor ordered. Coming back, I feel compelled to detox, typically defined as a process or period of time in which I get to abstain from or rid my body of toxic or unhealthy substances. But I find, it is not just my body that needs detoxification, my mind and spirit demand it as well.
Voltaire said so eloquently, “God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.”
And with this in mind, as I stay present these last fews months of 2018, knowing a lot is about to happen, to ensure that it is as wonderful as possible, I set out to give myself the gift of living well through conscious preparation. Proclaiming to the universe first that I love life, I love the path traveled, I love the opportunities to celebrate with those who show up, I set out as follows:
Detox Your Mind
If you are in the United States and have a television, it is that time of year when the onslaught of negative political ads hit the airwaves. And, it does not look to cease or let up until voting is concluded on November 6th. If you want to free your mind from this low vibrational current that perpetuates the poison of fear amongst the masses, you can, to protect yourself, turn it off. Certainly, at this point, it is your right to declare to those who seek power, “Shut up- not acceptable, enough!” If you don’t and feed the wolf, it will continue. Send the message that we demand better. And, knowing full well what does and does not resonate, pay attention to what you welcome into your space. Be willing to take responsibility for the thoughts invade your mind.
Lord Acton, a British historian of the late 19th and early 20th century articulated well, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” And, in answer to this, you and I will have a chance to check our leaders where morality lessens when power increases. Representation of the many, in answer to the now where the power is with the few, is the balance that a prosperous country seeks. To detox and free your mind, protect yourself from being manipulated by fear. Then, fill your mind with those things that will open yourself up to empowering ideas and innovative things that will lend a hand to the ease and flow of living well. Nelson Mandela reminds us, “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”
Detox Your Body
The body is the vessel through which you experience this world. It needs nourishment, sleep, care, and love. Over this past year, focusing on a new career , certain things have taken a back seat. With all the nerves and concerns, a chaotic mindset lends a hand to poor choices. Let today be the day where the shift occurs. Choose meditation to calm the anxieties. Pick an exercise that allows you to breath in life and exhale toxins. Stretch to wake up those parts that have long been ignored. And, then reduce the inflammation by virtue of a good cleanse. Feeding your vessel with those things that are life giving. Make it your goal to move naturally through your day. Stop and smell the roses.
Cultivate a purpose to further the joy that can pour into you. Receive the goodness that is yours for the taking. Not only will you have more energy to do the things you love, but you will have more opportunities to love what you do as the weight is lifted and your body effortlessly and gracefully dances through your days. Today is always a good day to begin it. In the inspirational words of Goethe, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.” And, remember to be kind, you are a work in progress.
Detox Your Spirit
And finally, and most importantly, free your spirit with a detoxification. The spirit is the essence of who you are. The English word spirit comes from the Latin spiritus meaning to breathe. You and I are here so that our spirits can breathe into the experience of life. You and I benefit from sharing in a community of spiritual seekers. One of the biggest tragedies of today’s advances in technology is that more people are suffering from loneliness and isolation. As Sukarno states, “The worst cruelty that can be inflicted on a human being is isolation.” As social creatures, isolation and loneliness are in direct conflict to who we are and how we wish to show up.
To choose to detox our spirits, our challenge is to find a right tribe where we can connect and share our life’s joys and struggles. To believe that inclusion rather than exclusion is the goal, we have a chance to meet where our experiences become more fulfilling as we unite. Belong to a community where we rejoice and heal our wounds together. Being a part of an organization that serves. Strengthening those family connections and friendships make life worth living. Cultivating strong networks that expand our love based tribe. Dolores Del Rio said to “Take care of your inner spiritual beauty. That will reflect in your face.” It feels good to do what makes your spirit come alive. And today is always a good day to start, so that the beauty is broadcasted to the world through your smiling face.
