“If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God.” ― R.J. Palacio, Wonder
Wonder is a movie that is a MUST see for anyone who needs a dose of courage and a kindness reminder in their lives.
Storyline: The gist of this story centers around a smart and funny 11 year old boy named August “Auggie” Pullman who was born with a genetic “chromosomal issue” that resulted in serious facial deformities. The movie, based upon the best-selling book written by R.J. Palacio, begins with Auggie and his family just at the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. After years of protection by his parents from other children, Auggie is about to enter the “cruel real world” of 5th grade -middle school, after being home schooled for his entire young life. This movie documents the story of Auggie’s journey with the other children also highlighting the story of how it impacts his Mom, Dad, sister Via, and Daisy the dog.
Meg’s Magical Review: OMG! This movie will have you feeling on so many levels. Joy, sadness, love, angry, compassion, forgiveness- it is a roller coaster ride of emotions. This courageous young kid scientist, Auggie, so amazing on so many levels, was dealt a hand in this life where he shows up to the world as different. Through his eyes, he navigates life, the good, the bad and the ugly and it is WONDERful as to how he does it-faces it all-and learns what he is made of, how strong and courageous he really is! And his family, how they stand by each other with love, sometimes tough-love, and with support is a testament as to what is possible when the spirit experiences love.
Simply put, the movie’s pitch is what this world needs more of right now: kindness. Everyone matters, no matter how they show up. Everyone is fragile no matter where they find themselves in life. And everyone is doing their best to muster up as much courage as they can to ride out their journey the best they know how. And, when we do show up as vulnerable as we are, everyone should get a standing ovation once in their lives so that each person knows how special they really are. Either way, you will certainly be transported back through time to a place where you can identify with the “mean kids”, the “courageous ones” or even with the “teachers who make a difference”. You will be able to take a soul check as to where you are now: Are you being kind, are you showing love, or do you stand in judgment as to what is different than you?
In the end, you are reminded that if every person in the room acted a little kinder, then this world will truly be a better place- Go see this movie- you will fall in love, if not with Auggie, but that “Auggie” part of you that makes you a WONDER too!
